King Henry's Story

Once upon a time in a faraway land there lived a king who loved chocolate milk. His name was King Henry.

Throughout his kingdom, King Henry made sure that all of the cows were fed great supplies of chocolate to continue to provide him with his beloved chocolate milk drink.

King Henry drank chocolate milk with his breakfast. He drank chocolate milk with his lunch. He drank chocolate milk with his dinner. He even drank chocolate milk for his bedtime snack. King Henry drank chocolate milk by the litres!

King Henry wanted all living creatures in his kingdom to enjoy chocolate milk as much as he enjoyed chocolate milk. However, a litre was not the best serving size for every creature. The Royal Carpenter was called for and the command was given for new serving vessels to be created to fit every creature in the kingdom.

For the creatures smaller than the king, the Royal Carpenter designed decilitres that were 1/10th the size of a litre, centilitres that were 1/100th the size of a litre, and millilitres that were 1/1000th the size of a litre. The millilitres were just right for the Royal Beetles and Bugs of the kingdom.

For the creatures greater than the king, the Royal Carpenter designed dekalitres that were 10 times the size of a litre, hectolitres that were 100 times the size of a litre, and kilolitres that were 1000 times the size of a litre. The kilolitres were just right for the Royal Giants of the kingdom.

The Royal Carpenter lined the vessels up in his workroom from largest to smallest to show the king. The king’s vessel was in the centre of the line, for the king was the centre of the kingdom. The vessels were arranged in the following order:

kilolitre hectolitre dekalitre litre decilitre centilitre millilitre

King Henry loved the new vessels that were designed larger and smaller than his own for all of the living creatures in his kingdom. The Royal Carpenter explained that the sizes increased and decreased from the king’s litre, the original unit of measurement, by multiples of ten. He explained how to convert between the sizes by multiplying by ten or dividing by ten.

Well, King Henry tragically died not long after that.  The cause of death was very unusual.... he died of drinking way too much chocolate milk.

From then on, all living creatures in the kingdom had no trouble remembering the order of the vessels.  They just thought to themselves:

King Henry Died Unexpectedly Drinking Chocolate Milk

kilo-  hecto-  deka-  [unit]  deci-  centi-  milli-
Since each step is ten times or one-tenth as much as the step on either side, we have:
    1 kilometre = 10 hectometres = 100 dekametres = 1000 metres
                     = 10 000 decimetres = 100 000 centimetres = 1 000 000 millimetres
Alternatively, we have:
    1 millilitre = 0.1 centilitres = 0.01 decilitres = 0.001 litres = 0.000 1 dekalitres
                   = 0.000 01 hectolitres = 0.000 001 kilolitres
The point here is that you move from one prefix to another by moving the decimal point one place, filling in, as necessary, with zeroes.

To move to a smaller unit (a unit with a prefix some number of places further to the right in the listing), you move the decimal place to the right that same number of places, and vice versa.

Together with the prefix sentence ("King Henry..."), this makes conversion between the different metric sizes very simple.

The Haunted House

One sunny afternoon a boy named Tom was playing out the front of his house when he accidentally kicked his soccer ball across the road and into a house.
This particular house was told to be haunted!  But Tom doesn't know that, so he ran across the road and into the haunted house.

Once inside, the door shut behind him.  Tom shivering in fear, slowly walked up the stairs.  He came to a corner. Then Tom heard the door open and shut.  He heard foot steps.  Tom was frozen.  He turned around and saw... His friend Jerry!
"Oh phew! It's just you!" Said Tom.
"I followed you in here."  Said Jerry.

Tom kept walking, so Jerry followed and as they turned the corner they saw a huge terrifying shadow.
The boys screamed, ran down the stairs, out the door, across the road and back to the front of Tom's house.

"OH MY GOD!"  Said Jerry.
"That was too close!"  Said Tom.  Then a small dog ran outside of the haunted house with Tom's ball.
"Oh! I guess it wasn't a monster!"  Said Jerry.
"Should we keep it?"  Asked Tom.
"O.K!"  Said Jerry.
"Lets name it Bazinga!"  Said Tom.

Slippery Sliddy Seals

‘Look!’ screamed Andie at the top of her lungs ‘TSUNAMI’, as the genormous waves crashed up along the rocky coast. It was Mum and Andie I driving to Christchurch right by the waves that looked like they would crush us ALIVE!

The weather was cloudy with slight drops of rain every minute. I knew the sun would come out eventually. And guess what the sun didn't come out the entire trip. The wind was rough, and so was the sea. My stomach gurgled as if I was getting sea sick in the CAR!

We stopped at a familiar café along by the sea. There was a nice warm fire that we all huddled around. We all decided to have a peek outside and the strong wind and the salty sea water brushed our faces as we left the building. As we walked down to the sea the huge foamy waves were swallowing everything in its path like wood, shells, boulders and even seals. Sometimes I wonder how they survive out there in the water.

After, we all moved on driving like we were being chased! ‘MUM’ ‘STOP’ I screamed ‘SEALS!’ Mum slammed on the brakes and we slid to a stop. It was a seal right next to the road. ’We could of hit it’ said Andie while she pulled out her ipad and stuck her head out the window. Then I stuck my head out the window too and then the smell of seal poo filled the car.

Mum and Andie both murmured ‘Let’s go!’ at the same time, so I knew they were serious, We sped down the road. I never knew seals stunk so bad!

Invercargill ANZAC Museum Display

Here I am at the Invercargill Museum. I have learnt that the people who heard about going to Gallipoli thought that is was going to be fun to see a different part of the world but they found they were wrong, the war had been terrible and you could be killed by guns, bombs, rats or grenades. "Loads of people had fought well and some never even returned." George Skerrett said in the video Voices of Gallipoli. I even dedicated a poppy to thank him for all he did for us.

George Skerrett is my teachers great grandfather and I read an article called Camel Meat and Corpses at school last term.  The article was about George going to Egypt and eating camel by mistake and when he got to Gallipoli there were many dead soldiers on the fields of Gallipoli.  It was a bit sad to read about all the people who died at Gallipoli.

My Amazing Adventure

There I was standing at the front door ready to open it. I walked into my new house with excitement and ran straight to my room. I could not believe that I didn't come home quicker.

A couple of hours later I felt really bored and had nothing to do. So then I asked Mum if she needed any help “No thanks honey” Mum replied. So I walked to my room laid down on my bed then I heard a “BANG” “Aww” I yelled Mum ran into my room “What’s wrong Zae” Mum said, “I banged my head” I laughed then Mum walked out.

KNOCK, KNOCK I quickly ran to the door to see who it was. “Hi” it was my cousin and Aunty and Uncle who came over. We played a lot of games and had a lot of fun. But 20 minutes later had to go sadly!

The next morning Mum, Dad, Deijah and Honor –Jheyde and I went to my old house to collect the rest of our stuff. I wasn’t that happy about it, but I had to do it anyway but that was so, so, so BORING.

Well I know I didn’t do anything for my holiday but I had a amazing time moving into my new house.

Bounce

“ Next session “ said a voice, I was at one of the most funniest places on earth, it was called bounce! I was really there with my family, you could go in any section that you wanted there was a dodge ball court, stunt section and even a free jump trampolines, it was substantial.

As I walked in the dodge ball court I saw my second cousins so we went on the same team and we kicked butt. As soon as we got off we went to the stunt section, while we were on there my youngest second cousin smashed his face on one of the pads and got a blood nose, my Uncle rushed to help him, after about five minutes he was back on like nothing happened.

After some good bouncing the parents said “it’s time to go.” My eldest second cousin and I asked “ where are we going,” the adults replied saying “ we are going to the carousel for lunch.” I was so excited because I had money I could spend and because this new video game had come called Halo Reach, and I was planning to buy it.

In conclusion, I loved hanging out with my family

Design Your Own App

Year 6's your Digital Literacy Challenge

this week is...

In this ICT activity, students create their own app.  It is open-ended and caters for the diversity of all students. It is student-paced, allowing students to work through at their own speed. Upon completion of the project, students present their new app to the class. A marking rubric is used to formally assess students and anecdotal notes are made along the way.

Activity 1 – Time To Use Your Imagination!

Think very creatively about the type of app that you would like to make. You will need to consider the following:
  • Title
  • App icon
  • Brief description of what your app will be about
  • Cost
  • Designers name
Have a look at the example below:
  • App: Angry Birds
  • Description: The survival of the angry birds is at stake and we need your help! Use your special skills to knock down the structures and free the birds. Only the brave will win.
  • Cost: $1.99
  • Designer’s Name: Rovio Entertainment Ltd
  • Icon:
Picture

Activity 2: Time to Plan!

Consider the following:
  • What will be in your app?
  • What does your app allow the user to do?
  • You will need to illustrate the levels/features that your app has. How will you do this?
Check out this example:
  • Angry Birds
  • Level 1 consists of 2 small buildings and 1 green bird. To move onto level 2 you will need to pick up a black bird and aim it at the 2 small buildings, freeing the green bird.
Picture

Activity 3 – Meeting the boss at Apple

The boss at Apple has heard about your new app and he wants to meet with you to discuss it. You will need to create a convincing marketing tool, using all of your persuasive skills!
Consider the following in your marketing tool:
  • Why should Apple and consumers buy your app?
  • Who would use the app?
  • What benefit does the app have for people/society?
  • How much does the app cost and why?
This step is extremely important! Apple (and your teacher) will need to see an excellent marketing tool to ensure that they can publish (grade well in this task – teacher) your app.

Activity 4 – Get Ready to Present

You will need to collect your ideas together and present using a power point presentation no longer than 1 minute 30 seconds. Make sure you have looked at the assessment rubric carefully so you know how you will be graded and then get moving on your presentation!

What is a Marketing Tool you ask...

The techniques and materials used by those who are involved in

the promotion of goods and services

Most business that need to sell their goods or services to the public will make

extensive use of various marketing tools, such as market

research and advertising to help further their success.

Go Karting

Thursday 23rd of April. We were driving at 10:30 in Gold Coast when I looked left and I saw go karting. I was with Callum my brother and my good friend Butch they are both 18. I told them that go karting was next to us so we drove in and we bought 3 rounds I put my old race helmet and put my GoPro on top of my helmet. I started recording and we were off. You can get up to speeds of 50 kilometers an hour on a 1.3km track.

I was trying to catch up to them but the seatbelt was pushing on my neck and I was just tall enough to go on the senior karts. You hat to be 140cm tall and I was exactly 140cm.

Road Safety

Bow And Arrow

There I was my sister and I sitting in the car with my Mum waiting for us to arrive at my Aunty and Uncles house on the outskirts of Perth for our holiday. Then I noticed something awfully terrible… no not really it was the complete opposite we were on the last stretch of road so my sister and I shouted”YAY”! Then as soon as I knew it we were there, the car screeched to a halt, my sister and I both jolted forward. I jumped out of the car in excitement! My Mum opened the back doors which made a really bad click so I ran to the back of the car and pulled out a huge black bag full of clothes. Surely it wasn’t my bag it had too many clothes in it!
Just as I walked through the door I was greeted by my Aunty and Uncle, then I walked inside and I could hear the dogs going mental out the back but I kept on walking, I turned left. Then came to a long hallway and walked all the way down until I came to a door, I opened the door and went through. I slid my bag under the huge bed sitting in the middle of the room, then I walked out but when I turned the corner I noticed an old man sitting in the lounge room. Then my Uncle walked up to me and said, “This is my Dad, he’s here to help tune your bow and arrow” I nodded my head and said, “oh hi" as I shook his hand firmly.
Then my Mum walked in and started to get into a conversation so I thought it would be a good excuse to go and get some more bags when I walked outside the only thing that left was a case with my bow in it. So I carried it inside and as, soon as my Mum caught sight of me she said, “Why don’t you show your Uncle your bow and arrow?" So I laid down the box and opened it up my Uncle and his Dad studied it carefully then my Uncle said, “Do you want to take it outside to have a shoot of it?" I nodded my head and picked up by bow and a few arrows, then walked outside where my Uncle and my Uncles Dad were waiting for me.
I stood in front of a target and pulled back the rope then…ZING the arrow didn’t even hit the target, so after hours of fine tuning and testing. I was shooting as straight as a ruler when I come back inside and dinner was ready, it was delicious and I get to shoot my bow tomorrow again YAY!

Weather vs Mankind

Weather vs. Mankind

Hail guns, as powerful as large as a grenade, sneaking to Lions Park. Tsunami bombs, as large as a tank, marching down Wattle Street. Hurricane mines, as powerful as lightning, riding towards our school.
Houses have collapsed, schools are smashed and power lines have fallen. Trees are fallen and they are scattered on the ground like leaves.
We armoured ourselves with gumboots coats and beanies.
With our sandbags we held the powerful flood back so it wouldn’t hurt any wildlife. We bounded through the debris and we protected the school with drains and gutters.
The weather pushed us to the edge of defeat but we overthrew them and we remained  victorious!!!

Weather vs Mankind

 WEATHER VS MANKIND

Marching from Karajini like cadets, we’re nearly there, we can see the battlefield, it’s nearly here, it’s about to hit us. Running like horses we run for the school, a flood of sandbags start covering our school for protection from the storm. Hail as loud as a gunfire, lightning as bright as the sun and floods rising like buildings. Trees have fallen, cliffs crumbling, buildings flattened and playground equipment torn down.

We use fallen trees as bridges over the pool puddles. With our umbrellas, raincoats, boots and beanies for armour we are ready to fight. All while we are fighting the weather is working up a storm of: hail bullets, spears of lighting, rain missiles, bombs of snow, gunpowder clouds and blasts of thunder.

We fought for our school today with pride and we bet the wind out of the storm, until it gets it back and comes for more.

Weather VS Mankind

Snowstorm Grenade, Lightning Blades,  Hurricane Ammo,  Gunpowder Tornado, Rain Missiles, Nuclear Tsunami, Sandstorm Jet, Heatwave Napalm and Rain missiles as deadly as death.

Nuclear tsunamis as big as the sun, lightning blades as fast as light, and heatwave napalm as hot as the sun.

Lightning blades, as quick as light, slicing down Tom Price – Paraburdoo road. Nuclear tsunamis, as big as the sun washing their way from the coast.
The Trees have fallen without leaves, roofs smashed, entire houses scarred with sandstorm sand.
We armour ourselves with jackets and beanies. With umbrella shields we get to safety unscarred. We dodge fallen trees and broken cars to get the battlefront.
We fought the best we could, it wasn’t enough, we were defeated...

Weather Warriors

Clouds as grey as gunpowder, glooming in from the coast. Lightning zapping the ground like tazers which is keeping everyone awake at night. The rain hitting the ground as hard as rocks, which is hard to escape.

No one’s around it’s just the power lines laying on the road with no movement.

We amour ourselves with nothing but a coat and gumboots to give us protection. We step outside with our umbrellas as shields, as we run to the nearest shelter. We scavenge to collect all the bits and pieces that stayed alive.

We fought for our school but Mother Nature won that time, but next time we will fight back with all we have!

Graffiti

The Graffiti Mural

Dad said, "Come on buddy" as I jumped in the car. We were going to a graffiti project. This was the second night of doing it. Tonight was all about the painting.

I arrived too an awesome scenery of  games and spray painted canvases everywhere.
Nathan and Frances doing a sketch of the word 'Tom Price', which we would be filling in with amazing paint.

We were separated into groups who had roles, ours were to colour in the background on the first panel. We were called the Taipans [credit: Me] I don't know why I suggested that name.

Two teams had already finished painting the words, so it was our turn to paint the background.  Zach and Jerry coloured the background and I did all the details. It was a blast, I had so much fun doing it.

All the other teams finished and then we had to hang it up on the fence and my parents arrived just in time to help. We all had a sausage a sizzle and drink for dinner, then we played pool before we went home.

Weather vs. Mankind

Snow, as strong as bombs crawling in pain from Paraburdoo one by one. We armour ourselves in coats and gumboots. With our sandbags and clothes we place them down to stop the flooding from the cyclone.

We tumble and turn though the rough cyclone we battle and race to the finish. Riffle of extreme heat, as hot as the sun, creeping towards Tom Price. Puddles of bullets as fierce as a tiger, staggering all the way to Tom Price Primary School.

Glass has broken, roofs have fallen and sand has blown away. Nothing in sight just dirt from the plains.
WE ARE YOUNG, STRONG AND MIGHTY WE FIGHT FOR OUR SCHOOL WITH COURAGE UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN….

Weather vs. Mankind

Weather vs. Mankind

The dust storm went off like a bomb, sand and dirt flying everywhere covering the huge terrain marching closer from Area W.
Sand and dirt spread everywhere and trees fallen on the ground.
Spears of lightning piercing the ground, running across the power lines, down Central Road.
We run for cover and put on our rain coats and protected ourselves with our umbrella shields and sand bagged the school.
We fought off the storm and became victorious!
