In blues music there are three kings: Albert King, Freddie King, and B.B. King. And while Albert and Freddie were tremendous guitar players and enormously talented singers, it was B.B. who would become the face of the blues for over 75 years.

On May 14, 2015, the music legend passed away at the age of 89, leaving a legacy of 43 studio albums, 16 live albums, and 138 singles.

Riley B. King was born on September 16, 1925 on the Berclair cotton plantation where he was raised by his grandmother. He sang in the gospel choir as young boy and purchased his first guitar when he was 12.

When he was 23, he began to play on radio stations in Memphis, Tennessee and very quickly gained an audience. In fact, he soon earned the nickname “Blues Boy King,” and, finally, his nickname for life, “B.B.”
B.B. King soon after took his beloved guitar, “Lucille” on the road and, for several decades, performed 250-300 shows a year. (By comparison, Katy Perry performed 150 shows in 2014, Taylor Swift will play 70 in 2015).

During his illustrios career, there have been many stories told about B.B. King, but perhaps none more famous than how his Gibson ES-335 was given the name “Lucille.” During one show in Twist, Arkansas, two men started to fight. As the fight escalated, a gas burning light was knocked over and the small venue caught fire. Like everyone else, B.B. hurried out as fast as he could. But once he was safely outside, he quickly recalled that his guitar remained on stage, inside the blaze. With reckless love for his instrument, he ran back inside to retrieve it. When the ashes had settled, it was discovered that the fight between the two men had started over a young woman named Lucille. B.B later said he named his guitar “Lucille” as reminder not to fight or run into burning buildings.

But ask any music lover or aspiring guitarist and they will have their own story about B.B. King: the first time they heard him play, sing, or were lucky enough to see him in concert.

Writing/Discussion PromptB.B King named his guitar “Lucille” and loved it like a real person. Do you have something in your life that you love that much? What is it and why do you love it so much?

Reading Prompt: Elements of StyleThe first paragraph of a newspaper article is designed to captivate and draw in the reader. It is after the first paragraph that readers decide if they are interested in the story and want to continue reading, or if they want to read something else.
Read the first paragraph of this article a few times. What did the journalist do to capture your interest so you would read more?

Identify various elements of style – including word choice and the use of similes, personification, comparative adjectives, and sentences of different types, lengths, and structures – and explain how they help communicate meaning.

Language Feature: Nicknames vs. Terms of EndearmentThe nickname that B.B. King was given was “Blues Boy King,” which was later shortened to B.B. This nickname replaced his regular name so it is written using capital letters.
Terms of endearment, however, are not written with capital letters. These could include “honey,” “sweetie,” “buddy” etc. Since they are not used to replace a name the same way nicknames are, they are not capitalized.
Do you have any nicknames? What are they? Does anyone, such as a family member or friend, have a term of endearment for you? What is it?

The Silver Ferns fought hard throughout the game but in the end were beaten by the Australian Diamonds, 58-55, in Sydney.

It was the 11th time Australia have claimed the world title, their third in a row.
Australia took control from the start. Racing to a nine goal lead in the first quarter (16-7).
New Zealand fought hard, winning the remaining three quarters but the lead from the first 15 minutes was too much. The Ferns outscore the Diamonds in the third (15-13) and fourth quarters (18-15).

Leana de Bruin was introduced at half-time in her 100th international appearance for New Zealand and the defender helped the Silver.
The final three goal deficit was the closest New Zealand got to Australia during the match.

Teaching Kids News - Philae

Read the news article and complete the activities provided in the post.

Philae has woken up.
That is very, very good news. It’s news that scientists around the world were hoping for, and waiting for. And for good reason.
Philae is a spacecraft that was sent on an important mission by scientists at the European Space Agency (ESA) about 10 years ago. It took a decade to reach its destination, an icy comet known as 67P (short for 67P/Churymov-Gerasimenko).
The scientists wanted the Philae to land on the comet and send back information about it. They hoped it might even give them some clues about how our solar system was formed.
But when the Philae landed, it ended up in a shadow on the comet. That’s unfortunate, because it powers itself through a solar panel—which needs sunlight to energize.
Scientists hoped that this summer, when the comet moved closer to the sun, Philae’s solar-powered battery would pick up a bit of energy and it would “wake up.” And on Saturday, June 13 Philae woke up and started sending signals back to Earth for the first time in seven months.
The next day, Sunday, scientists received three, 10-second bursts of communication from Philae.
Now, scientists are working to keep Philae’s battery charging so they can give it enough power to resume its mission—collecting data on the P67 comet.

Choose two of the following activities to complete...
Writing PromptPhilae is named after an obelisk (a monument) in Egypt that helped archaeologists uncover the meaning of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. With this in mind, why might have this name been chosen for the space lander?
Reading Prompt: Extending UnderstandingRead one of the linked articles cited below the article. How does reading from two different sources extend your overall understanding of today’s article?
Language Feature: PersonificationPersonification is a literary device used by giving animals, plants, objects, or, even, ideas human characteristics.
Pretend for a moment that Philae were a person.
What type of person might he be? How does the personification of Philae change your response to his mission?
How does personification manipulate the reader?

Wolf Tanka Poem

Wolf

The wolf stalks his prey

A howl means that it is close

It finds a lone deer

Then attacks with a fast speed

And brings it back to his lair.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

On the windy holidays there was a new park that was being built and we got to play on it with my friends. After a while I went on this spinning wheel and i felt sick. After one hour we had to go and that was sad, I wanted to stay but we had to go.

Once we had got home we had some dinner and we had this spicey chicken. After dinner we watched some WWE with my dad. WWE went for about a hour and a half.

Before we went to bed I asked dad if we could go to the park the next day and he said, ''yes''. We woke up the next day at 9:am. We went to ask dad if we could go to the playground but he was asleep so we waited.

Later on that day mum rang us and said we could go to the park. So we went to the park so wen went fot about an hour and a half. Then we had to go back home.

Next time i know not to go on the spinning wheel. I named it the wheel of DEATH. Every day on the school holidays we went to the park.
